Lovely colours on this french map. The book 'Visitor's London' I picked up because it is full of lovely (tiny) wood engravings including a few by Ravillious. The little one of the pearly Kings and Queens reminded me of some drawings I did way back at the beginning of Summer which I have posted HERE.

I have been reading a lot about traditional british folk dances recently, being most excited by the britannia coconut dancers (There is a great explanation in THIS book which I found in Waterstones bargain bin at xmas and is my new bible). I am thinking of making an A-Z of folk dances but so far have only gathered about half the alphabet...ANYWAY as a bit of inspiration I watched THIS which was brilliant and evocative and made me want to take up clog dancing. Watch it before it disappears!

I went to see the collection of Walter Potter taxidermy as part of Exhibition no.3 at the Museum of Everything, in London before Christmas and fell madly in love with a miniature stuffed staffordshire pitbull terrier (it turned out it was a stuffed foetus!) that was mounted on a red velvet cushion in a box frame. I decided I would just make myself one instead (out of fabric, not foetus dog) but I have forgotten what he looked like as I couldn't take photos! Anyway he was great. and looked kind of like these. I just wanted to share that.

I went to see the new shoe gallery at Selfridges yesterday with Millie and Darrin....it was ok until we stumbled across this photobooth which was supposed to encourage you to choose your favourite shoe and be photographed with it....we had fun and forgot about the shoes....

I have been dying to visit Anthropologie in London and today finally got there. Full of great fashion and interiors products but the wow factor is the styling and in the Regents Street shop the huge "green" wall ( a vertical surface planted up). It didn't disappoint! After spending a week walking around Kircudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet, Garlieston, Anworth, seeing Trevor Leat building the man (or was it woman?) for the wickerman festival, and spending a week trawling 2nd hand bookshops for a dictionary of superstitions, it seemed appropriate to watch 'The Wickerman' that was filmed in all those places, and displays some seriously weird superstitions at that! Bliss. 6 days spent staying in this beautiful house . The sun shone every day and we made time to walk in the beautiful gardens and parkland in between the long workshop sessions where we enjoyed just using our hands every day instead of our brains.Fantastic food and lots of new friends made. I did Janet Bolton's textile workshop and Andrew did stone carving gargoyles. Highly recommended. www.westdean.org.uk

Anybody with an All Saints nearby should go and see their fabulous new window concept which I understand is at all the branches. In the Newcastle Branch in the new extension to Eldon Square they have hundreds of old sewing machines on shelves lining the entire windows. They are all different - fabulous. Difficult to photograph though.

Went to see this film the other day which is not at all my normal choice of genre but I really enjoyed it....anyone who loves crime films (or not!) should go and see this as it is being advertised as 'the greatest crime film ever made'. Just to warn....it is very long...over 2 1/2 hours, but didn't drag for me. There is a good review here but it does give quite a lot away!

Went to an interesting exhibition with my dad this week at the Estorick Gallery, in Highbury and Islington. It was called On the Move and was showing different ways movement had been depicted in photography, painting and sculpture. Free for students so you should try and go! One thing that particularly caught my eye, was a tiny picture from one of Busby Berkeley's musicals which has inspired me to a project about them. This is from Footlight Parade.

We had a lovely morning round the charity shops looking for LPs with interesting covers and books with lovely illustrations. We were delighted to find in the Amnesty Bookshop a rare first edition ( 1949) of "Life in an English Village". It has sixteen original colour lithographs by Edward Bawden and numerous black and white drawings of teapots, staffordshire dogs, corn dollies and basketware. A delight as you can see.

We have now had a white landscape for at least 2 weeks with lots more snow in the past few days. Combined with blue skies and school holidays it has felt exhilarating because we haven't had to drive anywhere and have enjoyed long walks around Jesmond and Gosforth.

Even pets have been venturing out.

I have been mono printing all afternoon, preparing to teach this term's evening class on floral monotypes. I feel a bit rusty so started with simple techniques ( stencils and painting with the inks mixed with linseed jelly) to get going. The Museum of Everything.

A wonderful museum (featuring exhibition no.1) crammed with an eclectic mix of art made by 'untrained' 'unintentional' and 'unseen' creators. It is located in a terrace house/ware house type building in primrose hill. Some work that I found particularly inspiring was by sister gertrude morgan who was a missionary and produced naive religious art and Alexandre P Lobanov who after being denied a gun as a young boy became obsessive with them producing loads of paintings and portraits with guns. Interesting also, my dad noticed none of them showed any actual acts of violence.

I hear the exhibition is only on until Christmas so you should go soon!

Read some better reviews here if you don't believe me!

Let's hope exhibition no.2 is just as exciting....

Sacred made Real

In London this weekend to see 2 very different exhibitions. Best of all was The Sacred made Real; Spanish Painting and Sculpture 1600-1700 at the National Gallery.Realistic devotional paintings and fantastic full size wooden carved figures ( polychrome sculpture) . We have often been to Spain especially for Semana Santa and have seen these paraded through the streets. The Fernandez sculpture pictured here was particularly realistic and disturbing.

The exhibition claims to shock the senses and stir the soul and it certainly achieves this. Highly recommended.

On to Primrose Hill and The Museum of Everything. Alice is going to write about this.

Me and Ellie went to a lecture by artist/curator Fred Wilson on Friday...

We didn't really know what it was going to be about so it was a bit hit or miss but it turned out to be a hit- and the hit the nail on the head for both of our dissertations!

He was talking a lot about how he has worked in museums and how he has used objects from the museums and changed the way they are viewed to challenge how the viewer interprets the work, and encouraging the viewer to see past that actually 'pieces' and see things like the plynths and wall mounts as just as important as the things that are on them.

I noticed Ellie put this video on her blog and I want to copy her. (Thanks ellie!!)

I really enjoyed his voice too.

Bright Star

If you love sewing go and see Jane Campion's new film "Bright Star" this weekend. Not only it is visually ravishing to watch, has Keat's poetry and superb acting it also recognises Fanny Brawne's sewing skills and lovingly lingers on needles going in and out of fabric. Particularly poignant is her changing of the white stitching round her underwear to black thread after Keats has died.

Compton Verney

On Friday we went to Compton Verney ( www.comptonverney.org.uk) Its not far from Stratford and well worth a visit for its Folk Art. The objects which Enid Marx collected with the historian Margaret Lambert are housed there. The collection helped to provide Marx with ideas for her pattern and design work in textiles and relief printing. There is furniture, textiles, pottery, prints and many quirky objects such as homemade Christmas decorations and toys. Lots of surface decoration and very inspiring for illustrators and designers

Sophie Calle

While in London I visited the Sophie Calle: Talking to strangers exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery. It included a selection of work where she has reported on various encounters and situations that she has become involved in, for example when a stranger asked to mourn his break up by sleeping in her bed, or inviting an author to take charge of her destiny by directing her on how to go and meet it...

It was a fascinating and beautifully designed exhibition...you could easily spend a day there reading everything. Unfortunately I didn't have time to so will hopefully have a chance to go again.

I particularly liked a set of writing and photography that was made in response to a project where Calle asked strangers in the Bronx to take her to wherever they wanted (within the Bronx) and explain why.

Another interesting project was 'Prenex soin de vous' where Calle invited 107 women to interpret an email where her partner breaks up with her.

It is free so if your in London it is definately worth a look.
